Can
you believe there are military men and women
using government credit cards to fly to
Tahiti or Hawaii on personal trips at taxpayers’
expense?
Well, it’s
true, according to a former Armed Services
gentleman I met recently, who had served
our country for 20 years. He told me this
horror story about the misuse of government
credit cards after I talked to him about
"Post
the Finances."
Before
I go any further, I must emphasize that
I totally support our troops. These are
men and women of high integrity, who wish
to serve the American
public. The greatest gift a person can give
is to sacrifice his or her life for a friend.
In the case of our military men and women,
they are willing to do this for their fellow
Americans.
But misuse
of credit cards is wrong. It is one of the
abuses that would be quickly exposed by
posting government finances to the Web.
This also raises another issue. If we as
a nation can afford to give our military
personnel credit cards to misuse, we can
certainly afford to give them a raise instead.
The misuse
of credit cards, done in such a way that
we, the taxpayers who foot the bill, won't
see the charges, is unAmerican. Let's not
tempt our men and women of the military
with credit cards that can easily be misused.
Let’s give them a raise instead, so
they will not feel under pressure to compromise
their integrity.
